Mercedes-Benz Stadium implements drone technology

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium implements drone technology as part of stadium’s cleaning protocol.

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) has implemented drone technology as part of the stadium’s holistic cleaning protocol.

According to MBS officials the stadium “is the first professional sports venue to sanitise its arena using drones.”

MBS partnered with Lucid Drone to use a pair of disinfecting drones to sanitise key areas in the arena post-event, including the 71,000 seats, handrails, and glass partitions.  The stadium has a third drone available as a backup.

The technology has been tested as part of the sanitisation process and will be implemented as the stadium team welcomes fans back for the Falcons home game on October 11.

“The process of welcoming fans back involves actively listening and responding to their concerns and we understand that proper cleaning and sanitisation protocols are top of mind in the current environment.” says Dietmar Exler, COO, AMB Sports and Entertainment.

Stadium operators were exploring the utilisation of drones prior to the pandemic, but accelerated the process, making MBS the first professional sports stadium to adopt this technology.

The drones utilise electrostatic spraying nozzles for even distribution of medical-grade disinfecting chemicals including an inhibitor that prevents harmful bacteria and virus to adhere to surfaces without leaving a residue.

According to MBS, the non-toxic Hypochlorous Acid solution used is in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for maximum effectiveness without being harmful.

The drone is the newest addition to the extensive MBS cleaning and sanitisation program. The stadium  has also added a Sanitation Team for hourly disinfecting, 600 hand sanitiser dispensers and monthly anti-viral coating to help reduce the risk of exposure and spread of the virus.
